Originally narrated by Lord Krishna to Arjuna during the battle of Kurukshetra, the Bhagavad Gita is revered as a section of the 5th Veda. With its 700 verses, it encapsulates a conversation between Arjuna, a Pandava prince, and Krishna, his guide. Throughout this dialogue, Krishna imparts wisdom to Arjuna on various philosophical matters, such as consciousness, selfhood, and the nature of the universe.

Amidst the backdrop of a war-ravaged battleground, Arjuna seeks guidance from his charioteer Krishna, finding enlightenment through their discourse. The Bhagavad Gita explores pathways to devotion and introduces the concept of selfless action. While rooted in the rich tradition of the Upanishads, it also incorporates dualistic and theistic perspectives.

The Bhagavad Gita has inspired countless commentaries since its creation, evoking diverse interpretations of its core principles. Adi Sankara's commentary from the eighth century CE marked the beginning of this tradition. Interpreters often view the battlefield setting of the Gita as an allegory for the moral and ethical struggles faced in human life. Its call for selflessness has influenced leaders like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi during India's independence movement, who regarded it as his spiritual compass.
