The Bhagavad Gita is a profound spiritual text that offers insights into five fundamental truths and their interconnectedness. These truths include Krishna, or God, the individual soul, the material world, action in this world, and time. Presented as part of the ancient Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, the Gita serves as a significant repository of India's spiritual wisdom.

Originally narrated by Lord Krishna to Arjuna during the battle of Kurukshetra, the Bhagavad Gita is revered as a section of the 5th Veda. With its 700 verses, it encapsulates a conversation between Arjuna, a Pandava prince, and Krishna, his guide. Throughout this dialogue, Krishna imparts wisdom to Arjuna on various philosophical matters, such as consciousness, selfhood, and the nature of the universe.

Amidst the backdrop of a war-ravaged battleground, Arjuna seeks guidance from his charioteer Krishna, finding enlightenment through their discourse. The Bhagavad Gita has inspired countless commentaries since its creation, evoking diverse interpretations of its core principles. Adi Sankara's commentary from the eighth century CE marked the beginning of this tradition. Interpreters often view the battlefield setting of the Gita as an allegory for the moral and ethical struggles faced in human life. Its call for selflessness has influenced leaders like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi during India's independence movement, who regarded it as his spiritual compass.
